May draft metadata, summarise supplied research, identify candidate relationships, organise chronology and surface missing-evidence questions.

Documentary records, declarations, catalogues, photographs, institutional sources and other materials are preserved as evidence for human assessment.

Interpretation rule: an AI-generated claim is not a CEPS-verified fact merely because it is stored in the system. It remains a research output until the underlying sources and evidence have been assessed.

C2PA Relationship

C2PA is treated as a cryptographically verifiable digital-provenance layer, not as a substitute for the institutional provenance record.

Digital Asset

CEPS may retain an independent SHA-256 asset integrity reference.

C2PA Credential

Where present, C2PA manifest, signer, validation and binding information can be recorded as technical evidence.

CEPS Decision

C2PA presence or validation does not automatically establish CEPS provenance verification or certification.

The existing CEPS workflow already separates evidence, human provenance review, verification, publication, C2PA and certification states.

Human / Machine Consumption

CEPS is designed so that machine-readable information can remain accountable to human institutional decisions.

Human Consumer

Can inspect sources, evidence, AI assistance, uncertainty, review notes, provenance status and certification status.

Registry / Software

Can consume stable identifiers and structured fields without interpreting prose as an authority signal.

Future AI Agent

Can distinguish source-backed claims, AI-assisted outputs, unresolved issues and human institutional determinations.

Limitations & Governance

AI does not authenticate artworks.
AI does not establish legal ownership or title.
AI does not independently establish historical provenance.
C2PA validation does not replace CEPS provenance assessment.
Certification remains a separate human institutional decision.
